Chapter Eighteen

Seth

“You okay?” Beacon asks.

“I’ve been better.”

We’re at my grandparents’ house having lunch, as we do almost every Sunday. Not all the Deckers are here. Piper stayed with Teddy. I suggested they join us, but Pipe refused.

“We have plans for the day,” she argued.

What part of “try not to be out as much” she didn’t understand is beyond me. Piper claimed that yesterday no one disturbed them. This isn’t LA, and once the paparazzi went back to California, the city became a safe area again.

However, she promised they were just going to go to a library downtown and later to Silver Lake—which is an hour south of Tacoma.

I shouldn’t worry much since they have a bodyguard with them. But new stories and pictures surfaced about us. They’re like weeds in the middle of summer. They keep popping up even when we killed them. I don’t know when this will end and if we should just ignore it. Dad thinks we should look into it tomorrow.

“Come on, tell Beacon what’s bothering you, little Seth.”

Beacon has always been like a big brother or older cousin to me. We get along most of the time, and he’s always looking out for me. It’s easy to give him the SparkNotes of what happened within the past few days since he’s aware of most of it.

“We’ll skip the girl because you know my thoughts on that one.”

I do. He’s told me for the past couple of days that I should stop being stupid like he was and make a move on Teddy.

There’s a huge difference between what happened between him and my sister and my situation. We’ll never agree when it comes to my feelings for Teddy.

“What does The Organization mean to you?” The blow of his question leaves me startled for a second.

I respond with another question. “You said you were going to retire after you almost died. Why are you still working for Dad?”

His lips curve into a grin. “He calls us when it’s extremely necessary. We built a great team, and even when Sanford can work with anyone else, he’d rather be with us. I don’t have the right answer for you.” He shrugs. “Sorry.”

And he probably gave me the right answer. I have to quit The Organization. “My team is broken. I’ve never been able to rebuild it since…”

I don’t know how to finish the sentence. It all started when Archer died and ended when Beacon was almost killed, and two of my men tried to kill him.

He tsks. “You know what your problem is?” Before I can snap at him, he continues, “You lost faith in yourself. If you took over The Organization, I’d follow you. We all believe in you.”

“Dad—”

“See, that’s the problem. If you keep looking for his approval before you even understand yourself, then you’re fucked. Show him who you want to be, and he’ll accept you.”

“Is that what you did?”

He nods. “Pretty much. You have to show the alpha when you’re ready to lead your own pack and leave him.
